Entry 193-- Soundtrack Week, Part 1: "Otherworld" (and Site Update!)

Written By Christopher Audiophile on Monday, April 30, 2012 | 4/30/2012 10:48:00 AM

Soundtrack Week, Part 1
Song: "Otherworld"
Artist: Nobuo Uematsu (Vocals by Bill Muir)
From: Final Fantasy X
http://youtu.be/4umidcc_8rU (Cutscene from the game)
http://youtu.be/YWIDYnbexUA (Soundtrack Version)
Comments: It's a crazy day today on the blog! First and foremost, welcome to Soundtrack Week! To open things up, a song from the game that sparked my love of an entire of genre of games, Final Fantasy X. FFX was my first Final Fantasy game, and years later, I remember watching this scene with my jaw hanging open and my heart pounding. There's a popular misconception that the vocals in the song were performed by Rammstein-- this is not true. The soundtrack to this game was done mostly by Nobuo Uematsu, who composed the scores for most of the games in this series. Both the song and the scene are excellent. Enjoy!
As for the site update, there're a couple of changes. First, I made a few tweaks to some of the gadgets and such on the site. Secondly, I'm proud to announce we now have a Facebook "Like" button, which you should all go and click, so you can get updates and other fun stuff! And last but not least, I'm in the process of trying to get Amanda and Miriah added as authors, so you can more easily tell who wrote what. Come back tomorrow to see how it all looks!

Entry 192-- "Call Me Maybe"

Written By Christopher Audiophile on Friday, April 27, 2012 | 4/27/2012 01:26:00 PM

Song: "Call Me Maybe"
Artist: Carly Rae Jepsen

http://youtu.be/fWNaR-rxAic

Comments: Amanda here! This song is everywhere. And by that I mean, EVERYWHERE. There isn’t one friend of mine that I haven’t heard singing the chorus at some point in the last two weeks. It's all over the web, radio, and television, meaning you couldn’t avoid this song even if you tried. I’ve struggled with own my feelings about it, oscillating between sheer delight and complete hatred. But at the end of the day, I get it. Its classic bubblegum pop: breezy, up-tempo, and incredibly danceable. The song features one of the catchiest hooks I’ve heard in a while, making it the perfect earworm and a likely contender for song of the summer. You have to congratulate Carly Rae Jepsen on the commercial and critical success of the single. It’s well-deserved even if her lyrics are pretty terrible and overly simplistic. Honestly, though, who can’t relate to the song’s main sentiment, the excitement and anxiety of having a fancy new crush? It’s definitely crazy but I still find myself listening to and liking “Call Me Maybe.” The music video is also hilarious and kind of adorable. I suggest watching it at least once all the way through. Enjoy and have a great weekend!

Entry 191-- "Big City Nights"

Written By Christopher Audiophile on Thursday, April 26, 2012 | 4/26/2012 06:39:00 AM

Song: "Big City Nights"
Artist: Scorpions
http://youtu.be/pmE_l_dN9UM
Comments: My running buddy was singing the chorus of this as we were running this morning, and I got it stuck in my head, despite not knowing any other words (or even tunes) in the song. I came perilously close to tagging this video as NSFW, but decided against it. There's nothing explicit in it, but it's probably a bad idea to let your boss see this if he/she is uptight about people showing skin and/or drinking. As to the song itself, it's good 80's music-- a category about which I'm quite picky. I went and checked the song on Wikipedia... Apparently, Scorpions are both German, and heavy metal. To be honest, they don't sound like either to me... I'm still labeling the song as 'rock.' The song is excellent, so check it out!

Comments: *NSFW.  Sorry for the delay of the post today.  Anyhow, this is a great song by Lily Allen and the music video is a bit strange but fantastic.  Amanda played this song recently and has been in all of our heads the last few days so it must be shared.  The up-beat tempo is quite catchy.  Enjoy!

It's quite excellent, and I never would have expected a pairing of Maroon 5 and Wiz Khalifa. It works well, though, and the song is definitely worth a listen. Enjoy!

Comments:  Hey all!  It's Miriah with a post about one of the newer songs just released.  I heard this a few weeks ago on the radio but it hadn't been released yet, but finally here it is.  The radio mentioned that Powter was on his way to being a one hit wonder with his song "Bad Day" however, the announcers are hoping that this song will change that for him.  I can't say that this song is going to top the charts are number one for weeks, but I will say that it is good and I felt the need to share it.  His album "Turn On the Lights" will be released this upcoming summer.  Enjoy!

Song: "Fighting Trousers"
Artist: Professor Elemental
http://youtu.be/0iRTB-FTMdk
Comments: This song is a shining exemplar of a truly hilarious genre called "Chap Hop"-- a half-seriously, mostly-silly spin on hip hop done by 'Chaps.' Professor Elemental is one of the major artists of the genre, and frankly, I think he's hilarious. The song is a dis track against another of the major artist of the genre, Mr. B., the Gentleman Rhymer. Enjoy the song!

Entry 184-- "Burn It Down"

Song: "Burn It Down"
Artist: Linkin Park
http://youtu.be/zgEKLhvCCVA
Comments: After my really, really, really long retrospective yesterday (in Entry 183), I'll keep this short. This song was released yesterday as the first single from Linkin Park's upcoming album Living Things. I like it. As a song, it's pretty darn good, and as a Linkin Park song, it's shown how much they've changed since the days of Hybrid Theory and Meteora. The song sounds nothing like vintage Linkin Park in songs like "Breaking the Habit" or "In the End"; whether or not that's a good thing depends on your opinions. I'm okay with this, and I like the song. Take a listen, maybe you will too!

Entry 183-- "Don't Stop Believin'" and 2000 Hits Retrospective

Written By Christopher Audiophile on Monday, April 16, 2012 | 4/16/2012 02:15:00 PM

Song: "Don't Stop Believin'"
Artist: Journey
http://youtu.be/2NQIPVqLMUg (Live in Japan, 1981)
http://youtu.be/rfUYuIVbFg0 (Album Version, Lyric Video)
Comments: First and foremost, the music, because that's what this blog is about. I chose this song for today because it seems so appropriate to celebrate the 2000th hit on Stuck In My Skull! Journey is, well, Journey. Classic, easy-on-the-ears rock that's truly timeless. I feel the need to say, (putting on my hipster shades,) that I liked this song before it was featured on "Glee."

So, having reached a major milestone, the authors of Stuck In My Skull look back.

Amanda: It's hard to believe we've already hit 2000! We certainly couldn't have done it without out our awesome followers. The past several months I've worked here on the blog have been great. Music is such a passion of mine and I'm extremely grateful to Chris for giving me the opportunity to turn my obsession into something fun and productive. It's been really cool to get share my love of all music with others and hopefully turn people on to new stuff or reintroduce them to old favorites. Thanks for your continued support. I look forward to sending more songs your way in the future!

Miriah: Hey everyone it’s Miriah.  I’m super excited to see so many people keeping up on the music!  I have only been writing for the blog a short while now, but I love getting to pick a song every week, even if that means battling amongst some favorites for the spot.  Hopefully you all have enjoyed some of the country music and I am going to make more of an attempt to put out some more songs with foreign languages.  These have been lacking and I would like to see them more often and if possible there will be both the original lyrics and the translation provided both can be found.  I enjoyed reading this blog before I had the opportunity to write for it and it has been great getting to see the progress that it has made.  After sufficient time has passed, my hopes are that I can blog a bit more often.  Thank you all for all the support you’ve provided for the blog and enjoy the future songs to come!

Chris: Two thousand hits. Wow. I cannot believe that this blog has come so far. It started as nothing, just a little project to talk about music and break the boredom of a dull break from the rest of life. I thought it would die in its infancy, like the previous two blogs I've had. This blog started on 7/16/11, and in less than a year, it's gotten 2000 hits. That's incredible. Some rough numbers-- roughly nine months, is 222 hits per month. Assume something silly like four weeks to the month, and that's 55 hits per week. When you think about that being split over five days, it sounds like 11 hits per day. That doesn't sound like much, but it is. Eleven people in the whole wide world is an infintesimally small number, but to my mind, that's 11 more than I ever expected to reach daily. And sure, 11 people don't show up daily, like clockwork. Some entries have zero views. The first entry has 22, at time of writing. Entry 113 has 38. That's cool, but it's completely beyond the point. What matters is this blog is stable. I never expected to have anyone, and to have eleven people regularly read what we write is ridiculously amazing to me. I never expected to get anywhere, and so I'm blown away by how successful this has been. 2000 hits in 9 months. And this blog, this little corner of the internet, is growing. I'm staring at all sorts of numbers and graphs, and the thing that stands out to me is that the line is rising. We're not only stable, we're growing. To me, that's really something.
We're growing. And now that I don't have to panic and worry about whether or not my blog is even going to make it, I can look ahead, and look back. Somewhere along the way, I picked up two more writers, something I never expected to do. Now there are three heads contributing to this blog, and three sources of ideas. Three perspectives, three sets of favourite songs, three people with one shared love-- music. At some point, there will probably be three columns, three series of posts, three different flavors of music all under the SIMS name. Who knows, maybe there will be more. Looking forwards, I see all sorts of craziness coming. I'm toying with the idea of keeping an 'Upcoming Releases' board somewhere, with release dates of the most interesting-looking music. At some point, if the blog gets big enough for people to take it seriously, I'd like to do interviews with artists. Maybe we'll get a community going. So many possibilites lie ahead, all of them fresh and wonderful and inviting. I don't like stale content, and it pleases me greatly to say that ahead of us lies just the right mix of old and new, repeat and fresh.
Looking back... Wow. The first few entries I wrote, I had all sorts of tags that I've never touched since. I had genre tags, that I completely forgot about! Or entry 11... What the heck was I talking about with a 'Revisit?' I don't know why some posts have so many hits... Why does Amaranth (Entry 113) have so many hits, and what's up with Heart Week, Part 1 (Entry 107) having as many hits as the rest of Heart Week combined? I just don't know. Stuff like this, you all should talk to me about. Email me, comment, like us on Facebook and drop a message, however you want to do it, but I would love to hear from anyone who saw those posts what made them so popular.
Which brings me around to you. You, reader, are what makes this blog happen. Thank you. Thank you for reading, and I sincerely hope you enjoy what you see and hear. If you do, tell us, and we'll do more of that! If it sucks, tell us! This blog exists because of you. Yes, you. Talk to us, and we'll listen. Send me a song, and I'll feature it. musictourettes@gmail.com. Every now and then, I use a song that was given to me by someone else, and I always thank them for it in the post. I give credit where credit is due.
Anyway. I'm sitting here, listening to the song for tomorrow's entry, wondering what Amanda and Miriah wrote for today. I'm contemplating what I'm going to write for the song of today. And most of all, I'm realizing that I'm more long winded than is really good for me. I'll wrap this up. Thank you, reader. Thank you.

Entry 182-- "Our Kind of Love"

Song: "Our Kind of Love"
Artist: Lady Antebellum
http://youtu.be/QaOKbvpxnTo
Comments:  Hey it's Miriah with some Country for this week.  I recently came across this song and fell in love with it.  Lady Antebellum has been becoming increasingly popular over the last few years especially now in 2012.  They have had about six or so very popular songs however, this song has not been released as a single and it probably should be. This week I'm also sending out to the one I love, so hopefully he takes a listen.  Enjoy!

Entry 181-- "Vandalism"

Written By Christopher Audiophile on Thursday, April 12, 2012 | 4/12/2012 08:33:00 AM

Song: "Vandalism"
Artist: Porter Robinson feat Amba Shepherd
Comments: A friend of mine told me to check this song out ages ago, and so I promptly wrote it down, and just as promptly forgot about it. A few days ago, I stumbled upon that note, and gave it a listen. I truly regret not finding that note sooner. This song is quite excellent. It's sound stands out among contemporary electronic music, and the song itself feels fresh and original. Amba Shepherd's voice is just as striking-- clear, and is noteable for having a tasteful amount of Autotune applied to it. Yes, there is such a thing as a tasteful amount of Autotune-- you can play tricks with a voice that fit with the music, aren't glaringly unnatural sounding, and mesh well with the tune. Mr. Robinson and Ms. Shepherd, excellent work.

Written By Christopher Audiophile on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 | 4/11/2012 09:07:00 AM

Song: "Scatman's World"
Artist: Scatman John

Comments: Oh, Scatman John, you are amazing. People frequently tell me, right or wrong, that the 90's didn't get much right, and this artist is my counterexample. Beyond the fact that he's infinitely classy-looking, sports a mustache the likes of which hasn't been seen in eons, and is the single greatest artist (and quite possibly only artist) of his genre, Scatman John is epic. (I might have a slight man-crush.) The day I found out that he was no longer in this world was infinitely sad. Anyway, this song is wonderful, and brightens my day. Hopefully it brightens yours too!

Entry 179-- "The One I Love"

Written By Christopher Audiophile on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 | 4/10/2012 06:57:00 AM

Song: "The One I Love"
Artist: R.E.M.
Comments: Sorry for yesterday's aborted entry, folks. The previous version of Entry 179 was up for a few hours, before I decided to hold onto it (probably until next week) and pulled it off. This version of Entry 179, (which isn't going anywhere,) has been stuck in my head all morning, so, what the heck, to the blog! Once again, I have to give credit to that fabled game, Guitar Hero, for showing me this song. Never has Guitar Hero claimed to be anything like playing a real instrument, but it certainly is a good way to spread music. The video for this song is a tad odd, but who cares, the song is good. Enjoy!

Entry 178-- "Sometime Around Midnight" and Update!

Written By Christopher Audiophile on Friday, April 6, 2012 | 4/06/2012 12:56:00 PM

Song: "Sometime Around Midnight"
Artist: The Airborne Toxic Event

Comments: Hey it's Amanda! Here is one of the first singles released off The Airborne Toxic Event's self-titled debut album. It got a lot of air play back in 2009 and shot the band into success. Until recently, I forgot about this song and how amazing it is. I chose it because I honestly love it and think it  deserves a mention. There are two music videos for it, only one of which I've posted here, and an acoustic version too. Enjoy and have a great weekend!

Edit: 10:21 PM, 4/6/12: UPDATE-- There's now an official video out for "Dance Again"! Check it out! http://stuckinmyskull.blogspot.com/2012/03/entry-173-dance-again.html

Entry 177-- "Malo"

Written By Christopher Audiophile on Thursday, April 5, 2012 | 4/05/2012 07:08:00 AM

Song:  "Malo"
Artist:  Avicii
Comments:  Hey everyone! Miriah here with some Spanish for the week.  Normally, I would provide a country song but I'm also a big fan of languages so once in a while I'll throw in something of the sort.  I heard this song recently for the first time and fell in love with it.  It has a great up beat tempo despite the not so cheerful lyrics.  The title translates to "Bad" and despite my efforts to find the English for our non-Spanish speakers all I could find were the Spanish lyrics.  This is a fantastic song and I hope that you all like it.  Enjoy!

Entry 176-- "Starry Eyed"

Written By Christopher Audiophile on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 | 4/04/2012 07:05:00 PM

Song: "Stary Eyed"
Artist: Ellie Goulding
http://youtu.be/fBf2v4mLM8k
Comments: Yep, this has been stuck in my head for a few hours... by which I mean all afternoon, and into the evening. Unfortunately, today has been absolute chaos, which is why this entry is so long, and I don't really have time to go into more detail on this excellent, excellent song. Thankfully, it speaks for itself. Enjoy!

Entry 175-- "Level(s) 2"

Written By Christopher Audiophile on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 | 4/03/2012 06:54:00 AM

Song: "Level 2" or "Levels 2"
Artist: Avicii

http://youtu.be/fw-Ctm29skQ
Comments: Thanks to Amanda for reminding me that this song exists! There is some confusion on whether this song is called "Level 2" or "Levels 2"-- the video given here seems to think the latter. The song itself has absolutely nothing to do with the original "Levels," at least as far as I can tell. I hear no similarities between the two (beyond the style of Avicii, that is), and it shares none of the same hooks, beats, or melodies. Regardless, the song is excellent. Give it a listen!

Entry 174-- "I Just Came To Say Hello"

Written By Christopher Audiophile on Monday, April 2, 2012 | 4/02/2012 06:16:00 AM

Song: "I Just came To Say Hello"
Artist: Martin Solveig & Dragonette
http://youtu.be/LnET4RKXx5k
Comments: First and foremost, if you missed it, there was a special entry over the weekend to cover a hot new song! If you to get updates on that sort of thing, like us on Facebook and never miss out!
As far as this song goes, it's been stuck in my head for the last day and a half, trading places occasionally with "The Wanderer," which is exceptionally disconcerting. My mental playlist is just plain weird. Anyway. The song is excellent, and the video is silly, but cute. I really don't know how else to describe it. Enjoy the song!
