Comments: Hello everyone! I was originally going to write this entry on Mt. Eden's "Silence" remix, before realizing that I'd covered that song back in Entry 432, which I've updated with a download link. Lately I've been on a pretty massive dubstep kick. For me, that means I'll create a new playlist in my media player of choice (currently Foobar2000 or Clementine on Windows, and Clementine on Linux -- what can I say? I like opensource) and drag all of the artists I think of as 'dubstep' from my library into the playlist. Among those artists is Mt. Eden. Every time I drag them into a playlist, I'm pleasantly surprised when a drum and bass song slips in -- "Faded." Somehow, I never remember that Mt. Eden does more than just dubstep. And that's a shame, because they do it well. Both this song and it's later "2009" version are excellent tracks, full to the brim with adrenaline. Seriously, if you have a work out or a pump up playlist, this belongs in it. And best of all, like most of Mt. Eden's tracks from their days before signing to Ultra, both versions are free downloads! Comments: Good morning everyone! Why is it a good morning? Because look at the bright side -- no matter how bad your day gets, you're alive to see it. Okay, I admit it, I'm in a really great mood. I am back in action, blogging away and full of energy. Speaking of full of energy, have you heard today's song? If you haven't, give it a shot! If you have, have you seen the video? It only came out in May, which is impressive for a song that's been out so long. After five years and a million versions on Youtube and soundcloud, Mt. Eden released their official, final version with Freshly Ground through Ultra, and it's great. The video is a tad weird, but not necessarily in a bad way. Freshly Ground's vocals really make the song, just as they have in every bootleg version on the internet. Backed by a bass that makes the world tremble and waffles (the technical term for those "wubs") that are just the right amount of in-your-face, this song is a classic example of "How to make good dubstep." Enjoy!

Stuck In My Skull 432 -- "Silence"

Comments: Good morning, and happy Monday everyone! Today, I bring you a song that you've almost certainly heard some version of, if for no other reason than the fact that so many versions exist. Delirium's trance anthem "Silence" is one of the most remixed songs I know, and has one of the most confused lineages I've seen. In fact, I think only the track "Daddy DJ" and its many descendants and versions has a more jumbled heritage. This in mind, allow me to set some things straight (the Wikipedia article gives some information, but not necessarily enough). The original artist of the track is the trance group Delirium. The vocals were provided by co-writer and singer Sarah McLachlan. While her vocals certainly make the song, it's not her song. The song is "Silence", and the artist is Delirium featuring Sarah McLachlan. That being said, everyone has done a remix. Tiesto, Paul Oakenfold, and Above and Beyond have all remixed this thing. In fact, this song first got radio play when the remix by Airscape hit Canadian airwaves. As a matter of fact, the music video for the song is set to that remix, and not the original version. So are you really surprised there exists a dubstep mix? I'm not. I am surprised that I like it this much. Mt. Eden is one of the quiet giants of dubstep, and this New Zealand duo has put together an excellent track. The pulsating* synths perfectly accent Sarah McLachlan's ethereal vocals without overpowering them. The track retains its trance-like qualities to produce a surprisingly relaxing beat that I don't usually hear with such heavy bass. All said, this track is great -- a prime example of how to remix. Also, am I the only one who thinks that the background image for the 'video' looks really cool? I'd love to have it as a desktop background. Enjoy the song!

*I will not say "wubbing," but that would probably be a good descriptor here.

Comments: The internet is weird. I mean, who honestly sat down and said "Let's take a picture of a cute cat, put a funny caption on it, and butcher the spelling on the caption?" And beyond that, who would have thought they'd be hilarious  and turn into a hallmark of internet culture? Besides just locats, we have the internet to thank for the rise and spread of numerous bands and artists, such as Mt Eden. I'm not a huge dusbtep junkie, but I really like this track. I would almost have to call it 'chillstep'-- that wonderful portmanteau of a genre. However, I'm fairly sure there is an actual definition for chillstep, so I'll just settle for calling it 'really chill dubstep.' I love this track. And I love that it's a free download. The link in the youtube description leads to a 'file not found' on rapidshare, but as the annotation on the youtube video itself points out, the song is available as a free and legal download on their soundcloud, found here.
