Hey y'all! I'm currently in the city of Selma, Alabama where I'm spending my Spring Break. We're on a pretty tight schedule and I didn't think I'd have time to post but thankfully that isn't the case. I've been here for not even three days and in that time have seen many things- some of which has made me feel happy and joyful and some sad and angry. This song, written and performed by the wonderful Sam Cooke, is soulful and inspiring. I knew it prior to coming here but in the last few days I've heard it on more than one occasion. I think that the love and despair I've found here in Selma is conveyed perfectly in the song. Even without being here yourselves, I hope you'll find it as moving and powerful as I do. Comments: Happy Friday, folks! First of all, I would like to thank Amanda for telling me about this band. I would like to thank for Macauley for reminding me about this band. Song. What's not to love about this song? The instrumentation is fantastic, with those horns that I've been digging lately (since yesterday). The guitars on this track are just right, complementing the vocals, and the thing they do (or is it the keyboards?) on the third beat is just fantastic. The drumming seals the deal with that groove-able beat that just makes you move. And the vocals? Love 'em. Enjoy!

Hello! Let me start off by wishing everyone Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year! I don't have much to say except that this song is a cover of one of the best Christmas songs of all time by soul legend Otis Redding. I'm a fan of both Christmas music and the genre of soul, especially Otis Redding. Though he passed long ago, his electrifying performances continue to amaze and delight me. Like all his songs, he infuses a real sense of authenticity and emotionality into this one, which was originally written by Russian composer Irving Berlin (who was actually Jewish!) and later popularized by singer/actor Bing Crosby. If you didn't know better you might even mistake it for a love song. Merry Christmas and happy listening!

Comments: I was really surprised to realize that I hadn't used this song yet on the blog. That being said, I am more than happy to use it now. This song is just so distinct, that I could pick it out of a metaphorical crowd in an instant. Let's face it-- nobody really sounds quite like Gnarls Barkley. The only artist I know of that even comes close is Cee Lo Green, but wait! Gnarls Barkley is Cee Lo Green working with Danger Mouse. Anyway. I heard this song ages ago, and it stuck with me. Give it a listen, and to our American audience-- Happy Thanksgiving!

Hello! Today's song is R&B sensation Rihanna's latest single. "Diamonds" is a bit of a departure for the artist. She's deviated from her usual pop/dance formula changing the tempo and tone up. Her vocals are on full display and we actually get to hear the range of that gorgeous voice of hers. The video is equally as stunning and reminiscent of Drake's "Take Care" video, which she was featured in. The song touches on a common theme of Rihanna's: love and relationships. What's different is how hopeful and even happy she sounds, a welcomed change from much of her music. Enjoy!

Comments: Amanda here! A dear friend of mine showed me this video last year and I absolutely fell in love with Paloma Faith. This song, her debut single, was released in 2009 and is simply amazing. I don't have much else to say except that she's a sassy redhead with an incredible voice (and stunning hair of course!) and that I adore her music. The video is also quite good and fun to watch. Enjoy!
