Stuck In My Skull 560 -- "The Longest Road" With Remix!

Written By Christopher Audiophile on Friday, November 7, 2014 | 11/07/2014 07:31:00 AM

Song: "The Longest Road" || Artist: Morgan Paige feat. Lissie || Remix: Deadmau5 || Original: http://youtu.be/M4pugDVEBxY || Remix: http://youtu.be/shBKTA3QIok ||
 Original Track
Deadmau5 Remix
Comments: Hello and happy Friday, everyone! If you ask anyone who knows me, they can tell you that my memory isn't always the greatest thing. My short term memory just plain sucks sometimes. So when I hear a good song, I write it down. I've got a running document saved in my phone of all the neat songs I've heard, and when I'm struggling to find a song to write about or have a song stuck in my head that I've already written about, I break out the song list. That's exactly what happened today, and this particular song has been sitting on my list for way too long.
I originally ran into this song listening to Deadmau5's set from Ultra 2014, where everyone's favourite Mau5 mixes the accapella version of this track with "My Pet Coelacanth" (starting at about 18:00). I recognized the name of the producer of the song, Morgan Paige. He's appeared on this blog before, back in Entry 512 where I was talking about his song "Body Work" with Tegan and Sara. Lissie, however, was unfamiliar to me, so I looked her up. It turns out that she's a fairly talented singer-songwriter from Illinois, with a thing for that country/folk/rock triad that's all the rage these days. Her vocals really make the track move. For that matter, they'd make any track move. I love all three versions of this song that I've heard -- the original, the remix, and the accapella version thrown against "My Pet Coelacanth." The original version sounds about 60/40 house/folk, and the Deadmau5 remix neatly steps up the beat and makes the song into a bit better of a dance groove while keeping all of the original energy intact. Give this track a listen, and you won't be disappointed. Have a fantastic weekend, and don't forget to like us on Facebook!

Stuck In My Skull 517 -- "Somewhere Up Here (Drop the Poptart)" with DOWNLOAD

Written By Christopher Audiophile on Friday, May 30, 2014 | 5/30/2014 09:07:00 AM

Song: "Somewhere Up Here (Drop the Poptart)" || Artist: Deadmau5 feat. Colleen D'Agostino || http://youtu.be/5kqdkNp-uW0 ||
Comments: Hello and happy Friday, everyone! Today I'm bringing you one of the most confusing tracks that I've yet tried to research. The internet spent quite a long time going back and forth about whether this song would be on the upcoming Deadmau5 album or not, and it finally appears that the answer is "sort of." It looks as though this song is being cut into a shorter instrumental track and the vocals have fallen away entirely, but it's hard to tell until the album itself comes out. But leaving that question to the side, let's talk about this track itself. Quite frankly, it's amazing. Granted, there are two spots in this YouTube upload where there are brief audio glitches, but I've chosen to use this one anyway because it contains a working download link to a complete and un-glitched song. And this song is totally worth it. It's absolutely amazing. Ms. D'Agostino's vocals blow me away, and Deadmau5 has built an amazing track accompanying them. Honestly, it reminds me a bit of "The Veldt," in that they're both long tracks with great vocals and a somewhat relaxing tempo that's really driven by the melody. Overall, they're both gentle, for lack of a better term. That's not to say that this song doesn't have some aggressive beats -- check out at around 1:50. Like many of my favourite Deadmau5 songs, this one is characterized by an intricate instrumental and possesses incredibly crisp percussion. Seriously, his kick drums (are they even kick drums?) are so clean, with a bit of a sharp overtone that really drives a beat. Honestly, I can't say enough about this track, and I can't wait to see in what form (if any) it appears on the upcoming album. Give this a listen and a download! The link is on the YouTube page.

Stuck In My Skull 435 -- "I Remember"

Written By Christopher Audiophile on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 | 7/09/2013 06:13:00 AM

Song: "I Remember" || Artist: Deadmau5 & Kaskade feat. Haley Gibby || http://youtu.be/LGbRpdCRwt0 (Video) || http://youtu.be/zK1mLIeXwsQ (Album Version) ||
Comments: Good morning, everyone. Today's song is yet another exercise in how to fairly distribute credit among the artists in a song. Everywhere I can find it (meaning Wikipedia, on the album, and in the titles of both videos), this song is simply credits the artists as "Deadmau5 and Kaskade." I've always thought that vocalists should be credited though, so when Wikipedia told me this song featured vocals by Haley Gibby, I was rather torn. In the end, I elected to record her as a featured artist, because I think it's most fair that way. And hey, perhaps you'll fall in love with the ethereal, trance-like vocals of Ms. Gibby and decide to look her up. If that's the case, than I can rationalize that my including her as a featured artist will facilitate the discovery of new music, which is the point of this blog. This song is a calm, relaxing mix that sounds more than a little bit trance-y to my Tiesto-educated ears, which is by no means a bad thing. The album version of this song is nearly ten minutes long, but the music video version (the video above) comes in at just over four minutes. Honestly, I'd advocate in favor of listening for both, but they're both excellent. However you listen to this song, you won't be disappointed.

Stuck In My Skull 388 -- "Maths"

Written By Christopher Audiophile on Monday, March 4, 2013 | 3/04/2013 10:14:00 AM

Song: "Maths" || Artist: deadmau5 || http://youtu.be/wk-iScJwuCA ||
Comments: Ooooops... Late post. I'm sorry, everyone! Tomorrow's post will be on time, I promise!
This track is off deadmau5's latest album, >Album Title Goes Here<, and I absolutely love it. It's beat is in that perfect middle ground where you can either dance to it or relax to it, and the hook is so catchy! I don't know how deadmau5 manages to come up with such catchy songs, but I am very, very impressed. This song  is actually the first single from the album, joined later by "The Veldt" and "Professional Griefers," both of which are also excellent. Enjoy!

Stuck In My Skull 383 -- "One Trick Pony"

Written By Christopher Audiophile on Thursday, February 21, 2013 | 2/21/2013 06:41:00 AM

Song: "One Trick Pony" || Artist: Deadmau5 feat. SOFI || http://youtu.be/XoPPViAnBGw ||
Comments: So I originally wrote today's post on the song "Some Chords," not realizing that I have in fact written on that song before. My apologies, I missed it completely. I'm much more confident that I haven't written on this track yet. Taken from the same album as "Some Chords," "One Trick Pony" is a dubstep track featuring vocals from SOFI, who appears earlier in the same album in the track "Sofi Needs a Ladder." This track has a phenomenal beat, demonstrating Deadmau5's master over more than just house. Unlike much current dubstep, this song doesn't built to a drop part of the way through the song, but drops in the first few seconds of the track. Either way, I enjoy it, and hope you do too.

Stuck In My Skull 360 -- "The Veldt"

Comments: Good morning and happy Monday! To start the week off, I figured a nice, cheerful, upbeat song would be in order. Deadmau5 to the rescue! Having recently listened to his newest album (called " > album title goes here < "), I have to give the mau5 some serious props for successfully expanding his sound yet again. He manages to put down some really trance-inspired tracks on the album, such as this one, and even dishes up a rap song. If you get the chance, go take a listen. This track is eight solid minutes of happy and smiles -- enjoy!

Stuck In My Skull 354 -- "Sleepless"

Comments: Good morning, everyone. This song comes from Deadmau5's latest album, called " > album title goes here < ". It's a really new and different sound for Deadmau5, and I thought it was really interesting, so I just had to post it here. Rather than search for words, I'll just say it's slower and quieter than most songs by Deadmau5, and you should definitely give it a listen. Enjoy!

Stuck In My Skull 307-- "Professional Griefers" and Update!

Written By Christopher Audiophile on Tuesday, October 9, 2012 | 10/09/2012 01:00:00 AM

Song: "Professional Griefers" || Artist: Deadmau5 feat. Gerard Way || http://youtu.be/Hr2Bc5qMhE4 ||

Comments: Hello, all! Quick update: Amanda will, from now on, be doing her column on Tuesdays and Thursdays, not Mondays and Fridays-- this will give you two columns on any given day! We hope this works better for everyone.

Right, the song. This was stuck in my head all Monday afternoon, and beat out the new Ke$ha track for this blog entry. Sorry, Ke$ha, you can be tomorrow. This song is aggressively house, and I love it. The beats are hard and fast and unbelievably catchy, and though I don't like MCR very much, Gerard Way does a great job delivering the vocals. For what it's worth, I think the lyrics are hilarious. Enjoy the song!

Stuck In My Skull 306-- "Moar Ghosts N Stuff" and Site Update!

Comments: Hello, everybody, and welcome to the shiny new Stuck In My Skull! This week is going to be jam-packed full of awesome, all hosted on this site for your viewing and listening pleasure! You might notice that instead of "Entry 306," today's post is labelled "Stuck In My Skull 306." That's to keep our columns neatly labelled and separated. Yes, I said columns. Both Miriah's and Amanda's columns are publishing today, bringing you three times the variety!  I'll leave it to them to explain how and when they're going to run.

Today's song is a deadmau5 (pronounced "Dead Mouse," if you're unfamiliar with him) classic. Heads up, though-- the video posted has some flashing lights in it. Deadmau5 being his usual, abrasive self, he felt the need to complicate things and post a version of the song called "Moar Ghosts N Whatever" (first video) that is identical to the version called "Moar Ghosts N Stuff" (the link below the video), and to top it off, neither on of those has the same intro that Deadmau5 used on his album version of the song. Personally, I like this way a little better, so I decided to feature it instead. If you're curious to see the alternate intro, check the second link for an album version. I'm fairly sure he only used that version to make the album flow, but whatever. Enjoy the song, and welcome to the new Stuck In My Skull!

Note: Since we're still working out a few bugs, the site might change a bit from time to time. Just bear with us, and if something looks whacky, please, let us know!

Entry 245-- "Fn Pig"

Written By Christopher Audiophile on Friday, July 13, 2012 | 7/13/2012 05:00:00 AM

Song: "Fn Pig"
Artist: Deadmau5
http://youtu.be/f926Aw8ozvM
Comments: If the 'free download' in the youtube video turns out to not be free, be a scam, be a hoax, or be anything other than a perfectly legit free download, Stuck in my Skull is *not* responsible. That being said, it worked for me. And on the subject of things that work for me, this song more than works for me, it rocks me. In all fairness, I really think it should be written as "Effin' Pig" or "F'n Pig," but with fame and the ability to create songs comes the ability to name them what you like. This song is Deadmau5 at his finest, and, given the title, I suspect Deadmau5 at his Angry Birds. Enjoy the song, and enjoy the weekend!

Entry 212-- Tour of Techno Week, Part 2: "Some Chords"

Written By Christopher Audiophile on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 | 5/29/2012 08:00:00 AM

Tour of Techno Week, Part 2
Song: "Some Chords"
Artist: Deadmau5
http://youtu.be/MEQMkzjcLEA
Comments: Welcome to House music! For those of you who love definitions, Wikipedia explains House like this: "Early house music was generally dance-based music characterized by repetitive 4/4 beats and rhythms centered around drum machines, off-beat hi-hat cymbals and synthesized basslines. ... House music today, while keeping several of these core elements, notably the prominent kick drum on every beat, varies a lot in style and influence..." Anyway, the song. This song is taken from Deadmau5's (pronounced "dead mouse") album "4x4 = 12." Deadmau5 is one of the biggest names in House music, and is an acknowledge master of these beats and basses. Check it out, and if you like this song, I encourage you to go looking for more

Edit: So, I used Blogger's scheduling feature, and wrote this post last night. As it's now up, I am pleased to announce it works! I'll probably use this again. This bodes well for the regularity of future posts.

Artist: Deadmau5 & Wolfgang Gartner

Comments: This song is just plain catchy. If you like electronic music, I feel comfortable in saying you'll probably enjoy this. If you don't like or don't really have a preference for most electronic music, you might want to give this song a listen anyway-- it's an excellent song. To my ears, it sounds faintly reminiscent of Daft Punk, with some more modern House Music-y touches. Enjoy!

Entry 116-- "Raise Your Weapon"

Song: "Raise Your Weapon"
Artist: deadmau5
http://youtu.be/YnwfTHpnGLY
Comments: I'm really not sure why this is listed as just deadmau5. Other tracks off the same album with vocalists (read SOFI and Chris Lake) are written as 'Track Name featuring _____,' but not this one. Both the album and the listing for it on YouTube are just "Raise Your Weapon." The vocalist, according to Wikipedia, is Greta Svabo Bech, not SOFI like several other tracks on the album. This song is the one I play when I need an example of 'good dubstep,' and skip forward to dubstep intro right after the four minute mark. I say 'good dubstep' because the internet is flooded with '*insert pop song* dubstep remix!', most of which are abysmal. Dubstep is easy to do poorly, but deadmau5 does it well here. Enjoy the song!

*edit: Well, after checking the album, it turns out I'm being an idiot again. None of the songs listed have a vocalist listed on them. Acknowledgements are given as appropriate inside the album, however.

Song: "Sofi Needs a Ladder"
Artist: deadmau5

Comments: This is another one of those songs where I'm not sure why it's not written as _____ featuring ______-- in this case, deadmau5 featuring SOFI. The song is deadmau5's "You Need a Ladder" with vocals by Sofia Toufa (SOFI), and I'm not at all sure why she isn't featured in the official title. But that's beyond the point. The point is the song is quite excellent, I think. Catchy beat, witty lyrics, and keeps getting stuck in my head. At this rate, it'll get more time in my skull than the current champion, "Stereo Hearts."

Song: "Strobe"

Comments: Somehow, when I was first learning about the wonderful world of electronic music, I managed to miss Deadmau5. I don't know how. And after listening to this song, I regret not learning about Deadmau5 sooner-- "Strobe" is simply beautiful. Heads up-- if you're short on time, listen later; Strobe is a long song. Enjoy your weekend!
