Comments: Hello and happy Friday, everyone! If you ask anyone who knows me, they can tell you that my memory isn't always the greatest thing. My short term memory just plain sucks sometimes. So when I hear a good song, I write it down. I've got a running document saved in my phone of all the neat songs I've heard, and when I'm struggling to find a song to write about or have a song stuck in my head that I've already written about, I break out the song list. That's exactly what happened today, and this particular song has been sitting on my list for way too long.
I originally ran into this song listening to Deadmau5's set from Ultra 2014, where everyone's favourite Mau5 mixes the accapella version of this track with "My Pet Coelacanth" (starting at about 18:00). I recognized the name of the producer of the song, Morgan Paige. He's appeared on this blog before, back in Entry 512 where I was talking about his song "Body Work" with Tegan and Sara. Lissie, however, was unfamiliar to me, so I looked her up. It turns out that she's a fairly talented singer-songwriter from Illinois, with a thing for that country/folk/rock triad that's all the rage these days. Her vocals really make the track move. For that matter, they'd make any track move. I love all three versions of this song that I've heard -- the original, the remix, and the accapella version thrown against "My Pet Coelacanth." The original version sounds about 60/40 house/folk, and the Deadmau5 remix neatly steps up the beat and makes the song into a bit better of a dance groove while keeping all of the original energy intact. Give this track a listen, and you won't be disappointed. Have a fantastic weekend, and don't forget to like us on Facebook!

Stuck In My Skull 487 -- "Cups"

Comments: Hello everyone, sorry for missing Monday and Wednesday. Life took me by surprise with how busy I've gotten. To top it off, I just started a martial arts class, and while I really enjoy it, I've felt all sorts of sore and beat up and tired the last few days. I'm going to try to write a few posts this weekend in case I get unexpectedly slammed again, so that I don't leave you wonderful people high and dry. In the mean time, let's talk about this song. Dear lord, is it catchy. I've had this song stuck in my head since I woke up this morning, and I figured it's time to spread this ear-worm to you all as well. Odds are you've heard it, but it's a simple, cheerful, smile-inducing song -- it's definitely worth another listen. Enjoy!

Stuck In My Skull 402: Songs Revisited, Part 3 -- "Resistance (Muse) [A Cappella]"

Written By Christopher Audiophile on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 | 4/16/2013 09:19:00 AM

Songs Revisited, Part 3 || Song: "Resistance [A Cappella]" || Original Artist: Muse || Covering Artist: Voices in Your Head || http://youtu.be/fzuQ9-KlRDE ||
Comments: Hello and welcome back to Songs Revisited Week on Stuck In My Skull! When I write entries with covers of songs, I always have this debate about how I should write titles and taglines for the entries. In this case, I decided to follow the title used in the video accompanying this song for the tagline, and split the information in the entry into Covering Artist and Original Artist. Originally featured in Entry 2, this song is the a cappella cover of the Muse song "Resistance" as performed by the group Voices in Your Head, the a cappella group of the University of Chicago. Perhaps I simply haven't had enough exposure to a cappella groups and performances, but I found myself somewhat surprised to find that the performers not only covered the vocals but also the instrumentation of the song. This includes not only keyboard or guitar parts, but one of the longest and most competent beat-boxing performances I've ever seen to cover the percussive elements of the song. If I hadn't seen the video to this song, I frankly would not have believed that a group of human beings was capable of producing the vast and staggering array of sounds used in this song. The vocal 'instrumentation' of this song is so impressive that it almost outshines the actual vocals of the song, which are impressive. I mean, forget Glee covers, this is insane. Rather than try to imitate Muse vocalist Matt Bellamy's signature falsetto vocals, Voices in Your Head doesn't even try. Instead, they focus on the emotive, room-filling tones of their own lead vocalist (whose name I do not know), and back it with their jaw-dropping supporting vocals. Their supporting vocals are so strong that I feel as though they could probably carry the song alone, on their own power. This song redefined my notions of a cappella music, and I can honestly say this is one of my all-time favourite covers. To top it all off, Voices in Your Head filmed a truly excellent music video to the song, in which the quality shines brighter than I thought college students would be capable of producing. You should definitely check this song and video out.
