Stuck In My Skull 415 -- "Gentleman"

Written By Christopher Audiophile on Thursday, May 23, 2013 | 5/23/2013 08:27:00 AM

Song: "Gentleman" || Artist: Psy || http://youtu.be/ASO_zypdnsQ ||
Comments: Good morning everyone, or to those of you in some time zones, good afternoon! Today's song is a strange one. Everybody knows Psy from "Gangnam Style," the hype from which made his next release a very, very big deal. While perhaps nothing will be quite the viral sensation as that song and video was, Psy certainly gave it a try. Musically, this song is a mixture of Korean and English lyrics over a synth-heavy background built for dancing. The more I hear the song, the more I appreciate the instrumentation of it. If you were to ignore the video completely and know none of the lyrics, it would just be an ordinary (if very good) dance track. Ignoring the video, however, is pretty much impossible. This is Psy, after all. And so, I have to comment on it. Psy's dance moves follow in the spirit of those in "Gangnam Style" -- original and hilarious. That being said, his dance moves are the highlight of the video. I know Psy was going out of his way to act immature throughout this video, but sometimes I think it worked too well. On the other hand, that makes the eventual retribution all the funnier and more satisfying. Check it out, and see what you think!

Stuck In My Skull 331-- "Gangnam Style 2 Legit 2 Quit Mashup"

Comments: I'm really beginning to think that I should have watched the American Music Awards this weekend. Thanks to Miriah for tossing this at me. One of the things I really love about PSY is his incredible stage presence. This dude monopolizes the stage whenever he steps on to it, and to this point, I thought that anyone doing a duet with him was an utter waste of time because they'd be marginalized into irrelevancy. I would be wrong. It turns out MC Hammer can keep up. I know nothing about MC Hammer besides that he is responsible for the ubiquitous "Stop! ... Hammer time!" line, but I have a feeling I should be looking him up now. Anyway, this is excellent. Take a look!

Entry 287-- "Gangnam Style"

Comments: Every now and then, I have a moment where I look at what I'm about to write on, and think "I can't believe I'm going to write an entry on this and actually expect to have people take me seriously as a blogger." This is most definitely one of those times. I am aware that PSY probably wants to be taken seriously outside of South Korea as an artist, but he's got an uphill battle. Most Western audiences aren't familiar with K-Pop, and starting with a song like this isn't exactly conducive to taking the genre seriously. The first time I watched this video, I just sat there with my mouth hanging open, too surprised to even laugh. Once I got over the culture shock, though, I have to admit-- the song is well produced, insanely catchy, and so utterly ridiculous you have to smile and shout "oppa gangnam style!" (If you actually want to learn a bit about what all of it means, I recommend the Wikipedia article on the song as a great place to start.)
